ESRI’s Marten made the announcement here: ESRI’s geoportal extension is going open source (after a lot of administration issues are resolved.

For those unfamiliar with the Geoportal, look no further than ESRI’s website at http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/geoportal/index.html. Wonderful news for many in the community, but some issues do remain:

  1. ESRI’s Geoportal requires ArcGIS Server to work (it is an extension). Obviously it will hinder a lot of people.
  2. Encryption schemes used by ESRI are not allowed to be publicly available, a big hurdle.

It will be interesting to see how the community reacts to these news. Twitter is abuzz with news about it, and blog posts will be appearing everywhere soon.
